In December 2006 Mission East made a trip to the Karnali region of Nepal to see what help they could provide to the villages there. These are some of the photos from the assessment and you can read more about why we made the trip here or view some of the photos of the journey to reach Karnali.

Mission East > 01) Commentary by Graeme Glover "Prior to leaving for the assessment area, district political leaders had told us that where we were going had the worst humanitarian conditions in Humla and Mugu. However, they also told us that more central districts such as Saya and Goti were almost as bad. When we passed through Saya villages such as this one we couLd see that they were right."

Mission East > 02) "After four days walking, we arrived at the first subdistrict to be assessed. One of our team, such as Pertebi here, would go in advance to each subdistrict to arrange a community meeting with the relevant leaders. In this village (Lohuti in Kalika) we happened to arrive the same time as a delegation of regional Maoist leaders. The Maoists played an active part in the community meeting and were very supportive."

Mission East > 03) "In each village our welcome was invariably very warm, and we would set about organising the community meeting."

Mission East > 04) "All community meetings followed the same format. I would start by introducing Mission East and why we were there..."

Mission East > 05) "...I would then hand over to Andrea, Madhab and Ekraj who would run the needs analysis section using participatory rural assessment tools such as we see here at the Jaira meeting."

Mission East > 06) "As part of the meeting, villagers divide into groups to identify problems and causes."

Mission East > 07) "We would always ensure that there was at least one sub-group of females. This was done to help ensure that not only male priorities and impressions would be considered in project planning."

Mission East > 08) "After the community meeting, we organised two focus groups. One group worked with Kurt and Madhab and focussed on water and sanitation. The work here included the drawing of maps of existing water system structures, locations of villages and natural springs. This focus group also discussed sanitation issues and, as you can see from the young boys stomach behind Kurt's head, illness and malnutrition were issues that people brought up regularly."

Mission East > 09) "Again, in the focus groups, we tried to make sure that female opinions were also considered. You may also be able to see in the photo how cold the young girl is and also notice the flies on the face of the baby boy."
