In December 2006, Mission East carried out a detailed needs assessment in the remote Karnali region of Nepal to see what help they could provide to the villages there (following on from the initial needs assessment carried out in October 2006). Mission East > 1) Commentary from Graeme Glover...."18 December 2006....a great relief that we have managed to fly to Nepal's most northerly airport - in Simikot (Humla). A combination of weather and the quality of the airfield makes flights to this northwestern corner irregular. For the next 11 days we will see no transport and will be walking down the Karnali river until we reach Bajura. Then we will fly out from there."

Mission East > 2) "19 December...Leaving Simikot for the first day's walking. It is surprisingly hot during the day. As we were going to be losing altitude each day, these will be the last yaks we see for a while."

Mission East > 3) "19 December...Overnight accomodation was always a bit of a shock, and this turned out to be one of the nicest places we would stay in. I didn't like it however. I had seen mice running around and Andrea said that he had seen rats nearer the river. I did not sleep well, worrying about being bitten! Needless to say, nothing happened."

Mission East > 4) "We always seem to be walking up or down, it is rare for us to walk on flat terrain."

Mission East > 5) "22 December...An exhilarating day climbing over a mountain pass. After four days walking, we reached the beginning of the assessment area."

Mission East > 7) "During the day time, the combination of the warmth, the scenery, the physical exercise and just all the team getting on so well makes it very enjoyable...."

Mission East > 8) "...but the cold night times are completely different."

Mission East > 9) "23 December...it is late afternoon. To get to our destination for the night (Photu) we have to cross the Karnali river via a precarious basket bridge. By the time everyone had crossed it was dark, but it was just great that everyone had safely crossed."
