Fra død til liv i Nepal : I mere end tre år har Mission Øst arbejdet i et af de fjerneste og fattigste områder i verden, Humla og Mugu distrikterne i Karnali regionen i det nordvestlige hjørne af Nepal. Denne region, som ligger højt oppe i Himalaya bjergene, hvor Nepal, Indien og Kina mødes, er blandt de fattigste og mest isolerede i landet. Ud over den kroniske fattigdom er området særlig blevet ramt af det maoistiske oprør i Nepal med kampe mellem oprørerne og regeringstropper. Efter indgåelse af en fredsaftale i 2006, har befolkningen været i stand til at vende tilbage til deres hjem og er nu stort set fri for voldelige handlinger. For de fleste mennesker kan et normalt liv begynde igen. Der er dog fortsat store problemer, der skal løses. Manglen på rent drikkevand og de sygdomme, der opstår, når man drikker urent vand, er nogle af de værste problemer. Spædbørns- og børnedødeligheden er høj. Og sygdommene påvirker hele livet i disse fjerntliggende landsbyer: syge børn kan ikke gå i skole, og når de voksne er syge, kan de ikke arbejde, hvilket fastholder familierne i et mønster af fattigdom. Der er brug for forsyning med rent drikkevand for at udrydde brugen af urent vand fra kunstvandingskanaler og fra åbne vandpytter (som ofte benyttes af dyrene til at drikke) samt fra floderne. I de seneste tre år har Mission Øst og vores partner KIRDARC derfor arbejdet sammen for at forbedre tilværelsen for 25.000 af de fattigste i Karnali regionen. Arbejdet sigter at mindske forekomsten af sygdomme, nedbringe børnedødeligheden og højne den almindelige sundhedstilstand ved at bygge systemer for forsyning med rent drikkevand samt systemer for kunstvanding. Gennem undervisning i hygiejne forhindres yderligere spredning af sygdomme, gennem undervisning i bedre landbrugsteknikker øges høstudbyttet og kosten bliver mere varieret. Og endelig hjælper man landsbyerne med bedre at organisere sig selv og dermed øge uafhængigheden af hjælp udefra. Tidligere i år besøgte generalsekretær Kim Hartzner Karnali regionen med sin far, René og ældste søn, Philip. I 1991 grundlagde Kim og René Mission Øst. Siden 1993 har René rejst til Nepal, og blandt andet startet det arbejde, Mission Øst gør, med støtte til landbrugs- og indkomstskabende projekter i den sydlige del af landet. Men dette var Kims første besøg i Nepal. Sammen rejste de med helikopter til den fjerntliggende Karnali region. Overalt blev far og søn hilst af landsbybeboere, der var taknemmelige for de projekter, der havde forbedret deres liv og også reddet så mange af deres børns liv.

From death to life in Nepal : For more than three years, Mission East has worked in one of the most remote and poorest regions of the world, the Humla and Mugu districts of the Karnali Zone in the northwestern corner of Nepal. This region, which lies in high Himalayan valleys where Nepal, India, and China border one another, is among the poorest and most isolated in the country. In addition to chronic poverty, the area was particularly hard hit by the Maoist insurgency in Nepal and fighting between insurgents and government forces. Following the 2006 peace agreement, people have been able to return to their homes and are largely free from violence. For the most part, normal life can begin again. Serious social problems remain to be tackled, however. Clean water and illnesses from drinking impure water are among the worst of the problems. Infant and child mortality are high. Illnesses also cause ripple effects in these agricultural villages: sick children cannot attend school and men and women affected by illness cannot work, holding families in states of poverty. Clean water sources are needed to eliminate the use of dirty water from irrigation canals, open pools (often used by animals for drinking) and rivers. For the past three years, Mission East and our partner KIRDARC have therefore worked together to improve the lives of 25,000 of the poorest people in Karnali Zone, working to address the problems of disease, child mortality and poor general health through the building of clean water systems and irrigation systems, through hygiene education to prevent further spread of diseases, through training in better agriculture techniques to provide more reliable harvests and more varied diets, and through building the capacity of the villages to organize themselves and work on their own self-reliance. Earlier this year, Managing Director of Mission East, Kim Hartzner, visited the Karnali Zone with his father, René and son, Philip. Together, Kim and René founded Mission East in 1991. Since 1993, René had travelled to Nepal, starting up the work of Mission East in support of agricultural and livelihood programmes in the southern part of the country. This, however, was Kim’s first ever visit to Nepal. Travelling by helicopter to the remote Karnali Zone, the Hartzners were greeted by villagers thankful for the projects that had improved their lives and also saved the lives of so many of their children.
